VIDEO (in English): The traditional African musical instrument kalimba is reborn in Karelia, Russia.
In the outskirts of the capitol Petrozavodsk lays a workshop hidden for the public eye. Inside, the company YOKI, just six months old, by hands and plain machinery produces the kalimba on the ground of the finest Russian wood.
In this video Vertal Kolesikov demonstrates the instrument and how it is made in Karelia.
Traditionally the kalimba is tuned in an African sound, but YOKI has chosen to give the kalimba a European sound. As the kalimba might sound like a moving stream it is not strange that the company name YOKI in the old Karelian language, which is more or less similar to Finnish, is the word for river.
